The Biological and Chemical Fixation of Nitrogen

The enzyme nitrogenase which catalyses the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia in certain microorganisms is a complex molybdo-iron enzyme. Even now there is very little definite information about the chemistry of biological fixation at the molecular level, 1 which leaves plenty of room for speculation. In the 40 minutes at my disposal I could not possibly cover the whole area of such speculation, but intend instead to concentrate on two very definite steps forward which have been made during the past year, and concentrate on speculations from within my own research group.
