The following text is a considerably expanded version of the oral remarks which I made in the 30 minutes which I was allotted as the final conference speaker. For my oral presentation I selected a few topics related to giant resonances and gamma ray transition rates because I could comment about them authoritatively, without delay. It did not seem practical to include more in my oral remarks if they were to be comprehensible to the conference participants. I was encouraged to add to my written contribution to these proceedings both to provide a better perspective for readers of these proceedings and to include some of the physics that emerged during the discussions which followed the talks at the conference.
