Abstract

The research on optical fibers for communications has had, as is well known, an explosive growth since the beginning of the 1970’s especially in the U.S.A., Japan, and in Europe, the U.K., Germany, France, and The Netherlands. Today the industrial stage has already been achieved in some areas. In Italy also, research activity in this field has grown rapidly in several research laboratories. More recently several industries have also entered the field.
