Abstract
Photodissociation of ions is a new field of interest whose rising popularity perhaps reflects the exceptional satisfaction it has brought to its practitioners. The experimental techniques have moved in a very brief period from being few and heroic to being both diverse and straightforward. As this has happened it has been found that the data available are relevant to progress in a surprisingly wide variety of active areas of interest in ions and their reactions. Rather than duplicating a very recent review of work in the area [Dunbar, 1979], it will be more interesting here (following the presentation at La Baule) to organize some chosen examples of recent work into a framework intended to make clear the different points of view that have been taken in planning and interpreting photodissociation experiments. For a more complete bibliography (and for a less onesided stress on results from our own laboratory) the review cited above can complement the present presentation.
