Decay Processes of the Lowest Excited Electronic States of Polyatomic Radical Cations

  • Chapter
Kinetics of Ion-Molecule Reactions

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series ((NSSB,volume 40))

Abstract

The purpose of this review is to describe the decay behaviour of the lowest excited electronic states of radical cations of polyatomic molecules in the gas phase and to outline the techniques developed for such studies. The emphasis will be on investigations of excited organic cations using their optical emission spectra, although coincidence techniques relying either on fragment or photon detection will also be considered. The latter methods have been introduced within the past few years. The relation to the contents of the other chapters of this book concerned with ion-molecule reactions is twofold. Firstly, it is desirable to know as much as possible about the energetics and structure of species encountered in ion-molecule reactions, and about the decay rates and pathways for their excited electronic states.
