Nutrition Surveillance in Developing Countries, with Special Reference to Ethiopia

  • Chapter
Nutrition and Growth

Part of the book series: Human Nutrition ((HUNU,volume 2))

Abstract

The nutritional status of population groups has been a focus of considerable interest among public health and nutrition workers for the last two decades and a number of procedures have been developed for its appraisal (Joint FAO/ WHO Expert Committee, 1963; ICNND, 1963). The publication of a WHO monograph by Jelliffe (1966) on this topic, with particular emphasis on subtropical and tropical areas, stimulated intensive survey activities in many Third World countries. The reports from these surveys showed that the nutrition of individuals and communities was of wide public health and socioeconomic importance. As a result of these observations many national and international organizations and technical agencies initiated applied nutrition programs, especially among infants and children.
