Abstract

The civil rights crisis of the 1950s and 1960s and our country’s long and destructive involvement in the conflict in Vietnam turned our world on a new course, and the compass needle has been swinging wildly ever since. We seem to have lost the sense of direction that was once taken for granted. People are now better characterized by what they don’t believe than by the uncomplicated certitude of the past.

No matter who initiated the first involvement [in the Vietnam War] or subsequent expansions, the rest of us have gone along pretty supinely. If anyone is to blame it is people like me for not speaking out sooner.
