Abstract
Dahl’s chapter reflects both his psychoanalytic training and his work as a research psychoanalyst, but his theory is distinctly different from current psychoanalytic conceptions of affects and motives. It has elements in common with contemporary emotion theories (e.g., emotions are fundamental human motivations), but there are elements distinct from all of them. To his identification with psychoanalysis and his knowledge of psychological theories of emotion he adds an evolutionary perspective.
