The Application of Geometric Modeling to Metal Casting Technology
In the course of a large scale cooperative research effort between two major universities, The Georgia Institute of Technology and The University of Michigan, several geometric modeling packages have been examined and utilized in the building of various casting/rigging configurations. Modelers scrutinized include TIPS-1, PADL-1, ROMULUS and CAT-1. The test castings involved have included simple laboratory shapes as well as industrial product parts.
In general, we have found that acceptable model forms can be built without major difficulty. In some cases, depending for example upon the availability of primitives, certain approximations are necessary; in other instances the limited number of allowable statements has dictated such approximations. Furthermore, we have learned that work remains to be done on the questions of blending and the representation of the other patternmaking needs such as parting line determination, an area in which one surface-type modeler, DUCT, has already made extensive progress.
The most pressing needs of metal casting engineers working in this area, however, are applications packages to provide geometric modelers with the general purpose physical simulation schemes now available and the special purpose casting-oriented simulators under development.
This paper will describe the CADCAST team’s experience with the present generation of modelers, as well as its work in developing various applications packages which are intended for integration into package suites designed to fill the needs of the industry in the near future.
