Abstract

Upon discovering the internal language of the nervous system, in the mid 1920’s, Adrian and Zotterman (1926) immediately realized that the laconic messages transmitted as monotonous codes in which the only variable was impulse frequency, were probably decoded as the intensity of a particular sensory quality. Indeed, in their cats, intensity of a mechanical stimulus was reflected as frequency afferent discharge, and so it took little imagination on the part of those introspective sensory physiologists to equate the receptor response feature with the subjective magnitude attribute.
