Cognitive Effects of Acute and Chronic Pediatric Medical Conditions

Abstract

Professionals involved with the psychological assessment of chronically ill children have a vital role in the identification of present or potential cognitive deficits that may or may not be apparent during routine medical examinations (Magrab, 1978; Pless & Pinkerton, 1975; Wright, Schaefer, & Solomons, 1978). Since more children with chronic illnesses currently survive into adulthood and are able to lead less restricted lives, the adequacy of their educational experiences and vocational preparation has become a matter of increasing concern (Travis, 1976). Therefore, the application of assessment procedures to chronically ill children must reflect a change in perspective from a terminal, all-pervasive perception of disease to a focus on survival and long-term coping with medical conditions.
