Positronium: Recent Fundamental and Applied Research

  • Chapter
Positron Scattering in Gases

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 107))

Abstract

In the first workshop on positron scattering in gases the status of positronium (Ps)-related tests of quantum electrodynamics was summarized.1 In the ensuing 2 years there has been steady progress in this area.2 However, and more in keeping with the emphasis of intense positron beams in the present workshop, we have expanded our topic to include fundamental experiments in which Ps is principally used to probe matter, and the various methods used to form Ps, Ps* (excited state Ps), and Ps- (the Ps negative ion). Of course, a complete summary of these fields of research is beyond the scope of this paper. Thus, we have limited ourselves to highlighting selected experiments that we hope will indicate the diversity of research that involves Ps. This paper is organized into 3 sections: methods of forming Ps, Ps formation as a probe of matter, and fundamental properties of the Ps atom. For recent reviews of Ps see also references 3 and 4.
