Polymeric Pseudolatex Dispersions as a New Topical Drug Delivery System

Abstract

The potential use of a new class of polymeric colloidal dispersions and film forming agents, pseudolatices, were studied as unique topical vehicles. The topical anesthetic drug lidocaine was employed as a model drug in the study. The ethylcellulose pseudolatices containing tissue compatible and nonirritating nonionic surfactants, nontoxic solvents and other FDA-approved ingredients along with lidocaine were evaluated for their physical and chemical stability by periodic measurements of sediment height, particle size, viscosity and pH. All of the formulations except the one containing 20% ethyl-cellulose and 2% lidocaine were found to be physically and chemically stable. In vitro diffusion studies were performed on these pseudolatices to evaluate the availability of lidocaine from the formulations. Commercially available lidocaine products were compared to the pseudolatex formulations, and the amount of drug released from the pseudolatices in a diffusion study was found to be several times higher than from the commercially available products.
