Abstract

The purpose of the present lecture is to emphasize the important effects of critical fluctuations on the order of phase transitions. There are many cases in which the simple Landau theory,1 which ignores fluctuations, does not predict the correct order of the transition. We shall review several such cases, and suggest experimental situations in which (due to the fluctuations) the order of the transition changes viatricritical points
