Abstract
Previous chapters have commented on the amount of depression experienced by many patients who have coronary bypass surgery. These have been clinical observations and serve to persuade us that depression exists with this surgery. However, these observations will not tell us much about who is most likely to be affected by depression or whether depression can be avoided or lessened by crisis intervention. This chapter will describe a research project that attempted to find out how frequently depression occurs in coronary bypass patients, who is most likely to suffer from this depression, and whether it can be helped by a crisis intervention program.
