Crisis Intervention and Coronary Bypass Surgery

  • Chapter
Psychological Risks of Coronary Bypass Surgery

Abstract

Crisis intervention is not new. As a therapeutic technique, it has an unusual history stemming from the aftermath of the 1943 Coconut Grove nightclub fire which trapped 425 people. Eric Lindemann, a Harvard psychiatrist, in trying to help survivors deal with their grief, formalized the first mental health approach for dealing with the crisis of loss.
