Abstract
Acute diarrheal diseases are among the leading causes of childhood mortality and morbidity in developing countries and contribute significantly to malnutrition. A critical review (Snyder and Merson, 1982) of 27 active surveillance studies conducted for a year or more suggests that about 750 million children below 5 years of age in Asia, Africa, and Latin America suffer from acute diarrhea and between 3 and 6 million of them die annually.
