Structure and Function of Respiratory Membranes in Cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae)

  • Chapter

Abstract

The cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, were first described as a distinct group of microorganisms by the Breslaw botanist Ferdinand Cohn (1853), who initially classified them as “bacterialike organisms” (Cohn, 1875). Later, when it became clear that cyanobacteria carry out oxygen-liberating, plant-type photosynthesis, they were grouped as cyanophyta among the algae (Geitler, 1925, 1932, 1942; Fritsch, 1945). Even nowadays, the term “blue-green algae” is very widespread and well justified from a bioenergetic point of view regarding their typically plant-type photosynthetic machinery. On the other hand, the cell architecture of “blue-green algae” is typically prokaryotic (i.e., bacterialike), as was first pointed out very clearly by Starrier and Van Niel (1962). Thus, if emphasis is placed on structure rather than bioenergetics, the “blue-greens” clearly have to be classified as bacteria, viz., cyanobacteria. Also, for purely systematic reasons, classification of the organisms as (cyano-) bacteria has proved more adequate (see Rippka et al., 1979; Starrier and Cohen-Bazire, 1977). At present, it is certainly more fashionable to be a “cyanobacteriologist” than to be a “blue-greenologist.” However, for physiological as well as biochemical and biophysical purposes, it is useful to bear in mind that the cyanobacteria are prokaryotic algae, i.e., plants. The term cyanobacteria unfortunately does not offer clear-cut semantic differentiation from the other group of phototrophic prokaryotes, the photosynthetic bacteria sensu stricto, since bluegreen algae are also in fact photosynthetic bacteria.
