Role Transitions

Part of the book series: NATO Conference Series ((HF,volume 23))

Abstract

A burglar is sentenced to, say, a year in prison. When he starts to serve his time, important changes take place in his life. He must give up his job or he gets fired, he can no longer bring up his children, nor perform his role of husband, nor play soccer in the weekends, and so on. In this particular case for the span of a year the prisoner is dispossessed of his roles. When, a year later, he is released from prison, he returns to several social roles, which may in theory be the same as before his arrest. Thus, two important role transitions take place within a period of one year.
