Abstract

A description is given of the basic energetics and thermodynamics of the condensation of excitons into electron-hole liquid in semiconductors. The ground state energetics is reviewed, and recent work on the thermodynamics of the condensation, especially those features which can be related simply to the basic energetics, is described. In particular, theoretical approaches to the condensation phase diagram and to its critical point are given, and simple scaling relations between the ground state properties and the critical parameters are developed.

The effects of finite carrier lifetimes give variations from the present results on the low temperature gas side of the phase diagram (see Refs. 40, 51). They occur for T≲2K for Ge and T≲8K for Si, and their effects are not included in the present treatment.
