Immediate Medical Evaluation of the Diving Casualty

  • Chapter
The Physician’s Guide to Diving Medicine

Abstract

Of particular importance in diving accidents is the immediate and appropriate care of the victim. Proper initial management frequently makes the difference between complete recovery and permanent crippling or death. The most dramatic and life-threatening condition is air embolism, but even so simple a thing as a few hours’ delay in recompression of a diver who has missed proper decompression may precipitate aseptic necrosis of the bone (dysbaric osteonecrosis) years later.
