Abstract
Underwater swimming using self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba) not only is a popular sport for several million Americans but also has achieved a significant role in military and commercial operations. Accidents are the leading manner of death among Americans of less than 35 years of age, and they rank fourth for deaths in all age groups in the United States. Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death and more than 8000 deaths by drowning occur annually. Among accidents involving underwater swimmers, drowning is the leading cause of death.
