X Rays from Superheavy Collision Systems

Abstract

A new and quite fascinating field of atomic physics became accessible in the year 1976 when the heavy ion accelerator UNILAC of the GSI Darmstadt went into operation: the investigation of atomic processes in extended electromagnetic fields with a coupling strength Zα ≳ 1 (with 1/α = 137).
