Abstract

In 1923 Putman1 demonstrated the peritoneum to be a dialyzing membrane and in the same year Ganter2 first attempted to treat patients with acute renal failure with peritoneal dialysis. Because of numerous complications, use of the procedure was discontinued until 1946, when it was successfully performed on a number of adults with acute renal failure by Seligman and others.3,4 jn 1949 Swan and Gordon5 reported the use of peritoneal lavage in 5 children with anuria. Stimulated by the work of Grollman6 and Houck,7 intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD) was used freauently for the treatment of adults with acute renal failure in the 1950s. In the early 1960s reports by Segar et al.8 and Etteldorf et al.9 popularized this form of therapy in children.
