Summary
We discuss physiological, morphological and biochemical findings associated with hypoxia, active transport inhibition and metabolic inhibition to justify the use of cultured embryonic chick heart cells as a model system for studying myocardial ischemia. Measurements of ion content (Na, K, Ca), cytosolic free calcium, ATP content, LDH release and transmembrane potentials are combined with ultrastructural and electron-probe microanalyses to identify mechanisms responsible for myocardial cell injury.
