Abstract

The biochemical cause of the time dependent transition from reversible to irreversible damage in ischemic myocardium is not known. Tissue damage has been reported to involve alterations in many cellular events, several of which are interrelated. This makes it difficult to distinguish cause and effect relationships. Either or both of the primary factors causing ischemic damage, i.e., decreased oxygen supply and ATP content or accumulation of metabolic products, may initiate a heterogeneous cascade of metabolic and structural alterations that collectively cause irreversible damage. However, the precise nature of this initiating factor is still poorly understood.
