Human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV) is a type C retrovirus associated with some adult T-cell leukemias and lymphomas (1–3). HTLV-associated leukemia/lymphoma is endemic in southwestern Japan (adult T-cell leukemia) and parts of the Caribbean and is seen sporadically throughout the world. Evidence for a causal relationship between HTLV and this distinct T-cell neoplasia is strong; however, the mechanism of HTLV-induced leukemogenesis is unknown.
