Abstract
In this chapter, we will focus on the effects of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) on humoral immune responses. Results obtained by different authors are often contradictory, making this area confusing but at the same time very exciting. We have studied the influence of PGE2 on in vitro polyclonal immunoglobulin and rheumatoid factor (RF) production by peripheral blood lymphocytes stimulated with pokeweed mitogen (PWM) and the effects of prostaglandin synthesis inhibition in vivo on serum RF concentrations. Our results indicate that endogenous PGE2 (produced by monocytes and macrophages) enhances polyclonal immunoglobulin and auto-antibody production through an inhibitory effect on suppressor T cells. In addition to a detailed discussion of our own findings, we will give a survey of the results obtained by other researchers.
