Abstract
From April 1979 to January 1, 1984 (58 months), 220 patients received ST. JUDE MEDICAL® cardiac valve prostheses (106 aortic, 101 mitral, 13 double). Incidents of nonfatal thromboembolism occurred in 2 of 202 late survivors (0.4% per patient-year). Six patients (1.2% per patient-year) sustained anticoagulation-related complications, 3 of which were fatal and 3 nonfatal. There was one incident of paravalvular leakage (0.2% per patient-year) and no incidents of hemolysis, valve thrombosis or valve infection.
