Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 21))

Abstract

Molecular biology has made many advances over the last ten years. One of its most important achievements has been the development of monoclonal antibodies (MCAs). Similar to conventional polyclonal antibodies in their structure and function, the significance of MCAs lies in their specificity and immortality. A virtually endless supply of a MCA can be made available in a completely purified form. We will outline the essential steps in the manufacture of MCAs and discuss their potential uses in the fields of biology and clinical medicine related to cancer. In particular we shall stress how these sophisticated immunological agents can be used as tools to unravel complicated immunological problems such as the body’s response to malignant disease and the antigenic structure of certain common solid tumours, as well as having immense potential in the management of patients with cancer (table 8-1).
