Abstract
In recent years the artificial intelligence technique of knowledge-based expert systems has been applied to real world problems. Two common characteristics of the problems amenable to knowledge-based expert systems are: their large search space, where exhaustive search is impossible; and the need for a human expert to find a near optimal solution in a reasonable and cost effective time frame.
