Abstract

For half a century the management of manufacturing has differentiated sharply between the domain of the product designer and that of the manufacturing engineer. Each has been encouraged to “stick to his last” and let the other fellow run his own shop. Frequently design and production divisions have been located far apart. Sometimes designs are made before it is determined where or by whom they will be produced. Consequently, product designers go about the business of designing and dimensioning parts with all-too-little regard to what machine or machines will be used to make them.
