Abstract
Designed to be capable of forging 50,000 tons of steel annually, the necessary furnaces, pull-down forging press, handling equipment, and manipulators of the Ellwood City Forge Corp. open-die forging plant are all computer controlled. The 1,750-ton press consists of two counteracting rams which squeeze metal at 30–150 strokes per minute. Work held by two end manipulators is traversed back and forth, held steady, or rotated as required.
