3D Industry Applications: Robot Loads Air Conditioners

  • Roger W. Bolz

At Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors Corp., Lockport, N.Y., the assembly lines run continuously. They make air conditioners at Harrison and they depend on robots to pick up the finished units on the fly. The robot’s job is more complex than simple “pick and place.” “Each UNIMATE 2000 B robot has to be able to locate an air conditioner on the moving conveyor, pick it up, and determine the path of the loading position. Then it must place the unit in its proper location in a shipping container, within a 1/4-in. tolerance,” explains Gerald Paterson, Senior Production Engineer.
