Abstract
One hazard to computer operation is the electrical surge or voltage spike (also referred to as a transient by the technical expert). It is a rare computer catalog or advertisement-filled issue of a computer periodical that does not carry descriptions of surge protectors and exhortations to protect one’s computer and data by installing such a device. To appreciate what this device is and why it is wise to use one, a little background is necessary.
Despite the emphasis on and importance of the software, the system is still dependent on the right hardware, and this extends well beyond those many “peripherals” already discussed and described.
