Abstract
In 1937, several clinicians reported that patients receiving amphetamine for the treatment of narcolepsy and other disorders showed persistent losses in body weight (Nathanson, 1937; Davidoff and Reifenstein Jr., 1937; Ulrich, 1937). The significance of this observation was quickly realized by Lesses and Myerson (1938), who advocated the use of amphetamine for the treatment of obesity. Since that time, hundreds of articles have been written extolling the clinical effectiveness of anorectic drugs for weight reduction.
