Lectins and Morphogenesis: Facts and Outlooks

Abstract

Lectins are often defined as proteins, or glycoproteins, with special binding sites allowing them to “recognize”, i.e. to form a complex with, the carbohydrates present at the surface of red blood cells. For that reason, they are also known as hemagglutinins. More recently, the term “lectin” has been extended to molecules other than proteins, which have the same binding properties, and also to any sugar-specific molecule. We will confine this review to those lectins corresponding to the narrowest, older definition
