Abstract
There has been considerable interest over the last 15 years in the carbon metabolism of a range of lichen species and particularly in the movement of the products of photosynthesis from the algal component across to the fungal symbiont. This work has largely been developed by Smith and his co-workers and has been summarised in a series of reviews by Smith (1974, 1975, 1980).
