Gel-Route for New Glasses, Ceramics and Composites

Abstract

The gel route constitutes a powerful method of synthesis of glasses of high purity and homogeneity difficult to prepare by conventional melting techniques.

Various methods based either on the destabilisation of sols or on chemical polymerisation from organometallic compounds are presented. The possibility of influencing the “middle-range-order” in glasses is an important feature of this approach.

These low temperature methods could also be used in the preparation of ceramics of ultra-fine grain size with outstanding refractory or mechanical properties (ultraceramics) as well as of various inorganic composite materials.
