Abstract
In a variety of recent papers, the progressive equilibration of initially-free excess charge carriers with localised states has been analysed in terms of a “thermalisation energy” of value such that release from traps of this depth occurs with a time constant equal to the elapsed time since the equilibration process commenced.
In the present paper, the thermalisation energy concept is reexamined by relating it to the underlying trapping/release kinetics. The differing conditions under which the concept yields valid or invalid results are identified, and the conclusions are illustrated by reference to experimental data for various amorphous solids.
