Abstract

Consultation to nonpsychiatric physicians in general hospitals and other clinical settings is the cornerstone of the clinical service rendered by liaison psychiatrists.1 Patterns of referral for such consultations need to be recorded to help establish priorities in teaching, research, and deployment of personnel. Characteristics of the referred patients, sources of referral, and the main forms of psychiatric intervention need to be documented, and the stability of the referral patterns over time needs to be investigated.
