Abstract
Physical illness constitutes one of the major determinants of psychiatric morbidity. It may causerecurrence, exacerbation, orinception de novo of nearly every recognized psychiatric (mental) disorder (see reference 1 and Chapter 10, this volume). For example, myocardial infarction may trigger recurrence of a depressive disorder in one patient, markedly aggravate an anxiety disorder in another, or precipitate delirium in one who has never experienced it before. In all of these instances one may speak of psychiatric complications of the physical illness.
