Dynamics of Insecticide Movement in the Animal Body

Abstract

As a rule, mammalian skin appears to offer a more resistant barrier to apolar insecticides (such as DDT) than insect cuticle. Table 7—1 suggests that DDT penetrates into some insects’ bodies as though there were no barrier at all, while an approximately tenfold difference exists between the toxicities of injected and topically applied DDT in mammalian species. It is not, however, easy to establish any reliable basis for explaining the general tendencies of insecticide penetration through mammalian skin, because of a present lack of information.
