Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) covers a vast variety of subfields, each of which has become or is becoming a quasi-independent field of study and research: pattern recognition, expert systems, knowledge representation and engineering, robotics, natural language processing and understanding, automated reasoning, speech perception, problem solving and proof systems. From a more global perspective, however, AI is a discipline that identifies the common components and problems, interrelationship, and interdependence of these subfields. An analogy can be drawn with psychology and its many subdisciplines: developmental, cognitive, educational, clinical, and so forth.
