Language is perhaps the oldest subject matter of inquiry and speculation from the biblical accounts of divinity to the amazingly precise and rule-governed grammar of Panini, to Aristotle, the medieval philosophers, the 17th century rationalists, the 19th century linguists, neogrammarians and behaviorists, the structuralists in the 20th century, and the revolutionary revival of mentalism in the 1950s. Because of the nature and role of language throughout the known history of humanity, linguistics has remained a dynamic and vital science or art, depending on one’s disposition.
