Abstract
Diagnostic and prognostic uncertainty often surrounds the qualitative detection of proteinuria in asymptomatic individuals who seem otherwise healthy. Such uncertainty can be most pronounced when proteinuria is modest in amount and unaccompanied by any other clinical or laboratory abnormality. The unsuspected finding of isolated proteinuria on routine urinalysis can give rise to two important questions: (1) does proteinuria reflect the underlying presence of some form of kidney disease, and if so, (2) will the disease eventually cause morbidity or death? Unfortunately, it is not always possible to answer either question with confidence, at least on first examination of an individual patient.
