A Study of Lymph Node Lymphocytes in Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Chapter
Microenvironments in the Lymphoid System

Abstract

The role of lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains controversial. Patients with RA have increased levels of circulating activated lymphocytes, the levels of which correlate with the degree of active synovitis (1,2). It is not known whether these circulating lymphocytes are a spillover from the rheumatoid synovium, which contains lymphocytic infiltrates and follicles (3), or whether the lymphocytes are activated elsewhere and then migrate to the synovium, as the thoracic duct drainage experiments suggest (4).
