Abstract
The management of hazardous chemical waste has become an issue surrounded by considerable controversy and emotion in the USA. In fact, the emotion and controversy have often tended to lead considerations astray. Citizen and environmental groups become locked in combat with industrial interests leaving various levels of government caught in the cross fire. It seems appropriate at a conference such as this to spend a few moments in reflection to try to bring the critical issues in hazardous chemical waste management into focus. I will spend the first portion of my talk identifying what I consider to be those critical issues, and then I will close with a brief description of a developing technology which is typical of the kind of advances required for an ultimate solution to hazardous chemical disposal.
