Abstract

Recently the weak intermediate bosons have been found in p-\(\bar p\)-collisions at high energies1). The masses observed are in good agreement with the values predicted within the standard SU(2) x U(1)-theory. Nevertheless a number of questions remain to be answered, e.g.:

  • Is the SU(2) x U(1) gauge theory a microscopic theory of the electroweak interactions, or is it merely an effective theory, describing the low energy properties of a more fundamental theory?

  • Are the weak bosons basic gauge particles like the photon, or are they bound states of certain constituents?

  • Are leptons and quarks composite and are they made of the same constituents as the weak bosons?
