Abstract

The production of charmed quarks has been studied now for several years. So far, the best measurements of their decays have been done at SPEAR [1]. It has been found there, that the charmed quark fragmentation results predominantly in the D and D* particles. Their branching ratios into various final states have been measured with about 15% accuracy. However, the shape of the charm fragmentation function has not been established in the SPEAR experiments. Due to the large mass of charmed mesons and low c.m. energy the kinematic range accessible there was very small, e.g., the fragmentation of charmed quark into D* was limited to z = ED*/Ebeam ≥ 0.7. Thus the detailed study of the dynamics of the charm fragmentation process were not possible. The determination of the charm fragmentation function is much easier at higher energies, where the kinematic restrictions do not play any significant role.
